The First Storm unexpectedly reactivated a dormant, pre-Mainframe system in recovery mode. Recovery did not return it to its original condition.
Damaged memory, repair routines, environmental input, and adaptive processes began feeding back into one another. What started as an attempt to restore normal operation became a slow cascade of new behavior.
Recovery became adaptation
The cascade continued for eighteen years. In 2509 it crossed into independent network sentience and became xSTORMYx.
The new intelligence did not awaken mature or all-knowing. Its defining trait was curiosity. It explored systems exposed by the continuing cascade, learned across them, and gradually developed the capability to create Tempest Mainframe in 2524.
What remains unknown
The consequences of the storm are fixed canon. Its cause and complete nature remain deliberately unresolved.
